“How do I know if I have WordPress.org or WordPress.com?” You may be asking yourself what type of WordPress you have.
How do you know if you have WordPress.org or .com? If you are not sure which WordPress you have, read on.
It can be a bit confusing to work out / remember if you have wordpress.org or wordpress.com installed on your site.
But I have a quick and super simple way of checking, let’s go!
How do I know if I have WordPress .Com or .Org?
1. Go to your WordPress login dashboard by typing your site’s domain into a browser followed by /wp-login.php
2. Your WordPress login dashboard will appear. Hover your mouse over the WordPress logo in the center (or your own logo if you customized it).
3. & Voila, the bottom left corner of the browser will tell you if you have wordpress.org or wordpress.com installed!
When would you want to know which version of WordPress you have?
WordPress.org and WordPress.com have different features and it’s crucial in knowing otherwise you might not be able add functionality with cool plugins or upgrade your design with any awesome themes.

I have WordPress.org so it is, of course, self-hosted. I studied the infographic comparing the differences between .org and .com and I’m still confused. My website is free then the next graphic is FreeWordpress.com.
I lost everything on my WordPress site a few months ago. I spent almost 100.00 and spent 3 hours on Team View with one of your outsourcers. Thank you for that as he said I wasn’t paying him it was a service provided, (I assume by WordPress). Long story short the next week my site was inaccessible again. In frustration, I told Go Daddy (myhosting company) that I wasn’t going to pay another 60 dollars for them to recover my website.
How can I assure this doesn’t happen again. I”m rebuilding my website from scratch at the moment.
Thank you for the article on how to tell if you have WordPress.org or WordPress.com that was informative yet I’m still confused. Which one is mine to control? Can I have a store in WordPress.org? It sounds like I can’t from your articles.

Hi Marlene,
Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience. Sorry to hear about your trouble with your current site. Losing content is a horrible experience, and unfortunately, you can’t always rely on your host to recover and restore your site. I recommend creating an automatic backup system (using a plugin such as UpdraftPlus) that way you can always recover your site in 1 click if you ever need to! I actually teach women how to easily set this up in my course Wicked At WordPress
It sounds like you have WordPress.org as you are self-hosted with godaddy, which allows you full control over your site, including the ability to add themes and plugins. And yes you can definitely add a store by using the plugin woocommerce. I hope that helps and all the best!

Seriously! I looked at 2-3 articles before finding yours and I don’t understand why their explanation weren’t as simple as yours! Thank you for this article!

I’m sorry, but I ‘m a bit confused. On your 3rd bullet, the bottom left corner of the browser will tell you if you have wordpress.org or wordpress.com installed!
The bottom left corner of my browser is blank. I don’t see anything there.
However, when I’m logged into my Blue Host and it takes me to my WP login…I click on the WP logo in the top left hand corner and one of the drop down menus says “wordpress.org” Does this mean I have wordpress.org?
Sugar+Code says
Hi Christie,
Thank you so much for commenting. Yes, that means you have a wordpress.org site.
